The Teacher Who Began to Watch marks a turning point in Thieves of the Cathedral. For the first time, the story shifts from those swept along by the Cathedral’s growing influence to a man determined to observe it carefully. As Kojo Mensah quietly watches his town change, he begins to realize that the movement’s greatest miracle is not what happens inside the church—but what happens in the minds of ordinary people.
Kojo Mensah first noticed the Cathedral’s growing influence in the most unlikely of places: a staff common room, where an argument about unpaid salaries suddenly became less interesting than Apostle Abotare’s latest prophecy.

Later, Kojo began hearing the Apostle’s name everywhere: at Auntie Mansa’s chop bar near the taxi station, inside market conversations, during staff meetings, and among drivers discussing miracles with the seriousness usually reserved for football and funerals.
Eventually, even Kojo began attending the Cathedral occasionally, partly from curiosity and partly from the quieter loneliness that had started settling around his life in recent years.
Loneliness, he understood, can push even thoughtful people toward places promising certainty, especially in towns where community itself increasingly seemed to orbit one spiritual centre.
By then, Mama Grace had already committed herself fully to the church, and Yaw Boateng too had started speaking about the Cathedral with the protective loyalty of somebody slowly reorganizing his hopes around it.
And once suffering, hope, fear, and authority finally gather together beneath the same roof long enough, they begin creating something far more powerful than religion alone.
Dependence.
Dependence rarely announces itself honestly. It seldom arrives wearing chains or issuing commands. More often, it comes disguised as guidance, comfort, belonging, or hope. It persuades before it controls. It reassures before it restricts.
By the time people recognize its true shape, they have usually forgotten how many decisions they once made without asking permission.
Years later, people in Adomkrom would struggle to explain exactly when faith slowly stopped behaving like comfort and started behaving like control.
Most could not identify the precise moment because systems rarely transform publicly all at once. They begin by making themselves useful, then become emotionally necessary, until eventually people stop questioning them altogether because doubt itself starts feeling like betrayal.
Even then, there remained one question that divided those who reflected on the Cathedral years afterward.
Some insisted Apostle Abotare had known exactly what he was doing from the beginning.
Others argued that he genuinely believed he was helping people navigate lives already crowded with disappointment and uncertainty.
Even his critics struggled with one uncomfortable possibility: whether Abotare had deceived others first, or himself.
And by the time people finally begin noticing the difference, silence has usually already learned how to sit comfortably inside the room.
The Teacher Who Began to Watch is a turning point in Thieves of the Cathedral, where observation slowly becomes conviction.
